CLOTHING CONSUMPTION & WASTE

Fashion waste is a growing problem in Australia.

Research shows that in 1 year, the average Australian women buys 27kg of new clothing, wears only 33% of her wardrobe and then throws away 23kg of clothing (NSW Textiles Data Report, 2021).

This amount of waste created from the industry isn't
only having effects to our landfill and planet, but its causing unnecessary strain on charity organisations such as Salvos and Lifeline. These organisations are currently being faced with an amplified amount of waste.

THE PROVOCATION

THE SOLUTION

How can we divert the amount of waste ending up in our charity shops and landfills, and then actively shift the wasteful mindset of consumers towards one which values waste and our planet?

This provocation established the tailor-made and unique approach conceptualised as 'Public Threads'. 'Public Threads' is a design initiative to transform the wasteful nature of the fashion industry and reclaim waste.

Founded with a strong consideration of materiality, overconsumption and circularity; this concept explores a slow-down paced of making and engaging within textiles waste through the form of hosting workshops.

The making process aims to create connections between the individual, textiles and their community - by slowing down the overproduced and wasteful world. The workshops act as an opportunity to slow down, learn, make and hope to instinct a renewed value and appreciation to both planet and people.
